How to check if a photo has location data on iPhone
The info panel answers in one swipe — but only for the copy in your library. What the other person receives depends on how you send it.
Quick answer
Open the photo and swipe up. A map thumbnail with a place name means the file stores GPS coordinates — usually precise enough to pick out the building. An “Add a Location” link instead of a map means there is no GPS tag. To send without it, tap Share → Options, switch Location off and check that “Location Not Included” appears above Options.
Read the info panel: what each result means
Swipe up on any photo (or tap ⓘ) and look under the camera details. You will see one of three things:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Map thumbnail + place name, “Adjust” below it | GPS latitude/longitude is stored in the file | Strip it before sharing (below) |
| “Add a Location” link, no map | No GPS tag — capture time and device model are still there | Nothing to remove for location |
| No map and no “Add a Location” link | Often GPS is recorded but the map has not loaded (offline, or Photos re-indexing after an iOS update) | Check the file itself with the inspector below |
See every geotagged photo at once
Checking photos one by one does not scale. Photos already plots every geotagged shot on a map:
- iOS 26: switch to Collections and open Map (it replaced the old Places view; depending on your layout it sits under Pinned or Utilities).
- iOS 18 and earlier: Albums → Places.
- Zoom into your home or work address — every photo pinned there carries those coordinates in its original file.
Check the copy you actually send
The info panel shows your library copy. The recipient gets whatever the sending method produces, so test that copy: AirDrop or email the photo to yourself (or save it back from the chat), then drop the received file into the inspector below. It reads EXIF in your browser and flags GPS fields — nothing is uploaded.
On a Mac you can also open the file in Preview → Tools → Show Inspector → ⓘ → GPS tab. On Windows: right-click → Properties → Details, then scroll to the GPS section.
Check a photo for GPS in your browser
Drop the received copy here. GPS fields are flagged; the file never leaves this device.
- Runs entirely in your browser — no upload to Rewipe servers.
- Max file size: 12.00 MB.
- Finds metadata; wiping for keep/share copies is best in the Rewipe app.
Remove location: one share, one photo, or all future photos
- One share. Select the photos → Share → Options (top of the share sheet) → turn off Location → Done. “Location Not Included” now shows above Options. Your library copy keeps its GPS, and the toggle resets — repeat it for every share.
- One photo, permanently. Swipe up on the photo → Adjust under the map → No Location. Adjust → Revert brings the original camera location back if you change your mind.
- All future photos. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. Existing photos keep their location; only new shots are affected. Videos and Live Photos are tagged the same way, so this covers them too.
Which ways of sending keep location
Rule of thumb: anything that sends the original file keeps the GPS; compressed “photo” sends in chat apps usually drop it. Reports disagree for some apps, so verify with the check above when it matters.
| Method | GPS reaches the recipient? |
|---|---|
| AirDrop | Yes — the file is copied as-is, unless you turned Location off in Options |
| Mail, Files, iCloud / Drive / Dropbox links | Yes — original file |
| WhatsApp, sent as photo | Usually removed (image is recompressed) |
| WhatsApp or Telegram, sent as Document / File | Yes — original file, all metadata |
| Telegram, sent as photo | Usually removed (image is recompressed) |
| iMessage | Reports conflict — turn Location off in Options or test with the inspector |
FAQ
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does turning off Location in Share → Options change the original photo? | No. Only the shared copy is stripped. Use Adjust → No Location to remove it from the library copy. |
| Can I get the location back after choosing No Location? | Yes. Swipe up → Adjust → Revert restores the location the camera recorded. |
| Is there a setting to always share without location? | Not in Photos — the Options toggle has to be switched off for each share. Turning Camera location to Never avoids the problem for new photos. |
| Do screenshots have location data? | No. Screenshots are not geotagged, though they record when they were taken. |
